Resume & Reviews

TIN PAN ALLEY  Off Broadway
~Karla Shook offers a smoldering “You Made Me Love You.”  I won’t be surprised to see her on a larger stage soon.
Backstage.com Clifford Lee Johnson III
~Karla Shook is outstanding with “St. Louis Blues.”  She’s got a big voice and lots of dramatic intention which should move her career along at a rapid pace.  Times Square Chronicles  Sandi Durell

LES MISERABLES
~When Shook Sang I Dreamed a Dream, I was pierced to my very soul.  I could not take my eyes off her--such raw emotion!  It was not as though this were a mere performance, but as if it were REAL!!!  I was spellbound .
The Daily Eastern News.Com    Jessica Mertz
~Karla Shook, as Fantine, gives full justice to one of the show’s most famous songs, “I Dreamed a Dream.”  Odin’s Ravens   Dan Hagan

SPAMALOT
~Shook lets us have that full force in “The Diva’s Lament.”  Her swift, knowing looks are priceless.  Odin’s Ravens Dan Hagan
~Shook’s “Come With Me” was beautifully grand.  JG-TC.com

9 TO 5 THE MUSICAL
~Judy is played by Karla Shook and she brings some wonderful character development to the role.  With wide, expressive eyes, Shook takes the character of Judy slowly and subtly from a timid self-doubter to an empowered woman who is realizing for the first time what life can really be.  This is mirrored in her singing performances, which at first glance can appear understated before suddenly exploding into powerful vocals that are shockingly strong.
Herald & Review  Jim Vorel
~Her beautiful voice finally rings with confidence and conviction when she confronts her ex in “Get Out and Stay Out.”
Odin’s Ravens   Dan Hagan

I LOVE A PIANO NATIONAL TOUR
~Local darling, Karla Shook, has a splendid time in this production with a few heartbreaking moments ("Suppertime" and "Russian Lullaby") and some overwhelming comic ones ("Anything You Can Do" and "Change Partners") as well. She is a wonderful singer, with panache, and she does comedy shtick better than most.   Berkshire Bright Focus
~Berlin’s songs are handled with unassuming ease by the aforementioned and especially Shook. Shook is a bundle of talent with a voice that, in its maturation, has wonderfully expressive expansive range”.   The Berkshire Eagle  Jeffrey Borak
~Blonde Karla Shook and her bombastic belt get several of the choicest numbers…As if that weren't enough, the tempo picks up and Ms. Shook joins them with a little piece of musical heaven, "You're Just in Love" from the little-revived "Call Me Madam" (a recommendation to producers: snatch up Ms. Shook when she's got a few more years on her and revive that puppy -- her "Hostess with the Mostes' on the Ball" alone would be worth hearing)   San Diego Arts  Frankie Moran
~Belter Karla Shook (playing Sadie), hit the rafters with “God Bless America,” then switched to poignant ballads in “Suppertime” and “Russian Lullaby.”
Deseret Morning News  Ivan M. Lincoln

SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS
~Karla Shook is the gold standard of Mac-Haydn performers.  She can dance with the ensemble, as in “Goin’ Courtin”; reveal character in a song (Love Never Goes Away); and mine the irony of the moment with a raised eyebrow.  Under sharp direction, she and Rob Richardson find each scene’s internal beat.

The Schenectady Gazette  Paul Lamar

CAROUSEL
~But here too, one performer stands out from the crowd in a very positive way:  Karla Shook plays Carrie Pipperidge with real humor and flair.

The Siegel Column  Scott Siegel

WHITE CHRISTMAS
~Karla is absolutely luminous here.  Neither she or her sister has ever looked or sounded better.  I speak of them collectively, but of course that is not fair.  Karla and Kelly are completely different performers. Karla is cast as Betty, the sensible sister.  She is just breathtaking in a platinum wig a la Marilyn Monroe, whose womanly curves she also possesses.  The most beautiful costume of all is Karla’s grey lace gown for “Love, You Didn’t Do Right By Me.”  That gown and Gmoser’s dramatic lighting coupled with Karla’s powerful and poignant vocals made for stage magic.  A talented young woman at her most beautiful singing with remarkable power and range about love gone wrong.     The Chatham Courier  Gail M. Burns
